Haralabos "Bob" Voulgaris started betting on the NBA in the late 1990s. By the time he was 25 he had amassed a fortune and was regularly placing $1,000,000 in bets during a single day of NBA games. He made millions exploiting his edge of observing game-management tendencies by three head coaches, Eddie Jordan, Jerry Sloan, and Byron Scott.
He is one of a small handful of people who turns a large yearly profit betting solely on the NBA, Voulgaris is known to move the lines with his action, which can sometimes be as high as $80,000 a game. He has built up a network of employees, a database of statistics, and predictive models that far surpass what many NBA franchises have available to them.
Silver told Deadspin that Voulgaris is “maybe the best sports bettor in the world... [He’s] super sharp; works his butt off. He gets 57 percent of his NBA bets right.” Other sources said he gets 70% success on his bets.
